We all dream of summer when school is over and the relaxation can begin. But, soon enough, “I’m bored” complaints start rolling in. Instead of waiting for the inevitable, why not set up a summer schedule ahead of time? We have a general schedule that is up for lots of interpretation and flexibility. Take a look and adapt to fit your family:

Makerspace Monday

Set up a small space in your home with materials and let your child problem solve and create something new. Giving your child a particular challenge will extend engagement.

Tinker Tuesday

Time for some science experiments! Not sure where to get started? Check out these exciting ideas from Happy Hooligans. The experiments cover a wide range of ages and areas like sensory experiments, gravity experiments and classic experiments. https://happyhooligans.ca/science-activities-for-kids/

Wind Down Wednesday

Use the middle day of the week to relax and recharge. Journaling would be a great way to clear the mind and practice writing skills in an authentic way. Quiet time activities like word searches, puzzles or coloring pages also work great. If your child is up for it, meditation is an excellent way to practice breathing techniques that can be used in future stressful situations to self-soothe and reduce anxiety. There are tons of guided meditations out there, some as short as 5 minutes. If you’re looking to be a little more active, try some fun yoga poses.

Travel Day Thursday

Now this doesn’t mean take a super far trip every Thursday. All you have to do is change up the environment. You could simply go to a nearby park or bowling alley or make a scavenger hunt around the house.

Fantastic Friday

Plan a backyard picnic! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just lunch outside in the yard. If you do want to add some more excitement, make up some relay race games or include some water play.

Sweet Saturday

All week we’ve focused on fun activities for your child. Now it’s time to do something kind for someone else. It could be as simple as taking care of a pet or it can be a time to help others by volunteering in the community. Here is a list of multiple organizations in the area that can always use some more support: https://mainlineparent.com/volunteering-opportunities-for-families/

Surprise Sunday

Just like it sounds, keep your child on their toes with a fun weekly surprise!

We hope this schedule will work for you too. It’s easily adaptable and meant to be a fun way to approach summer. Do you have your own summer routine you’d like to share? Let us know in the comments.

Wishing you well,

Sarah
