Mother’s Day is more than just a day to give flowers and cards; it’s a time-honored tradition that celebrates the profound love and sacrifice of mothers everywhere. As I was thinking of special things to do with my mom and mother-in-law this year, I wondered, how did this beloved holiday come to be?
The roots of Mother’s Day can be traced back to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. In the early 20th century, Anna sought to honor her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, a social activist and community organizer who had dedicated her life to supporting women, promoting peace and improving public health.
After her mother passed away in 1905, Anna was determined to create a day dedicated to honoring all mothers and their selfless devotion. She tirelessly campaigned for the establishment of a national Mother’s Day, writing letters to politicians, organizing events, and championing the cause with unwavering passion.
Anna Jarvis’s efforts bore fruit on May 10, 1908, when the first official Mother’s Day celebration was held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. The occasion was marked by heartfelt tributes and the distribution of white carnations, which had become a symbol of motherhood. There was also a celebration in Philadelphia at John Wanamaker’s store!
Mother’s Day quickly gained popularity across the United States. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, declaring it a national holiday to be observed with “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated with a myriad of traditions, from brunches and family gatherings to handmade cards and thoughtful gifts. It’s a time for children to express their gratitude and appreciation for the love, guidance, and support they receive from their mothers and other special women in their lives. Handmade gifts, helping with chores or just spending time together are precious ways that many celebrate.
Mother’s Day is a beautiful reminder of the enduring bond between mothers and their children. This holiday provides an opportunity to celebrate the love that shapes our lives. By honoring the history of Mother’s Day and embracing its spirit of gratitude and appreciation, we can create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds of family. Here’s to all the mothers and mother figures who enrich our lives with their love, guidance, and unwavering support.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Keep going, keep growing!
