The autumn leaves are whirling around on this brisk day. With thoughts of summer fading quickly, I thought this was the perfect day to take a snapshot in time and have my kiddos create a handprint keepsake project.

It’s so fun to see how proud little artists are when they complete their projects. Creating art is calming and can improve self-esteem. When their creations actually include something that reflects their individuality (like their handprint in this project), you can just see them beaming with pride!

Supplies

  • Paper
  • Paint & brushes
  • Markers or Crayons
  • Scissors (optional)

Get Creative

There are so many options out there for fall-themed ideas. Here are just a few to get you inspired:

  • Pumpkin
  • Hedgehog
  • Owl
  • Spooky Monster
  • Ghost
  • Spider with web

After your artist decides what they want to create, simply spread out a thin layer of paint on a plate, have them gently wiggle their hand in the paint (my kids loved this step), then press down onto the paper. Once the paint has dried, it can be embellished to complete the creature and finish the scene. Faces and backgrounds can be created with markers, crayons, or cut out bits of paper. Once my kids got rolling they were really enjoying the creative process and we ended up with a mummy, spider, pumpkins, and monster.

If you don’t have paint, have your child trace their hand and cut it out to make their creature. If you have multiple children, have them each make a print on the same page for a cute family memento.

Don’t forget to have the artwork signed and dated and don’t fret over it having that Pinterest-perfect look. Allow your artist to have the freedom to create a project that expresses their vision according to their abilities. They will be so proud of their accomplishment and you’ll cherish it fondly!

I have a special drawer where I keep holiday and seasonal artwork that my kiddos have made over the years. I really enjoy pulling them out each season! I rotate the display on the dining room windowsill where we can all enjoy it. My kids are always so excited to see them and they love to recollect about making them. It’s fun to reminisce together!

I hope you enjoy displaying your handprint creation for years to come!

Keep going, keep growing!
