Every third Monday of January, we recognize and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by remembering his courageous actions and by giving back to the community. Please take MLK Day as a chance to get the ball rolling on your community service endeavors for the year! 

You can also use this national holiday as a teachable moment for your kids by explaining civic responsibility and the importance of helping others.

Below are just a few of the many local opportunities to partake in. Please remember that while this day is a great time to help, these organizations need support all year round! 

Jarrettown United Methodist Church – Dresher, PA 

  • Address: 1460 Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA 19025
  • Monday 1/16/2023, 10-12PM
  • Visit the church to: 
    • Make no sew blankets for kids 
    • Make blessing bags for homeless (bring additional supplies if possible) 
    • Write thank you notes for emergency personnel and veterans 
    • Assemble meals for those in need 
    • Stuff animals for children  
    • Create snack bags for homeless

Beth Am Israel – Penn Valley, PA 

  • Address: 1301 Hagys Ford Rd, Penn Valley, PA 19072
  • Monday 1/16, 9AM-1PM 
  • In-person:
    • Drop off electronic devices with a cord to be recycled 
    • Drop off donations. Accepted items include: 
      • Diapers and baby wipes
      • Gently used clothes
      • Food items to be added to new immigrant welcome boxes
        • Canola oil (1-1.5L)
        • White rice (3-5 lb bag)
        • Dried Black or Pinto beans (1-2 lb bag)
        • Tortilla Flour Maseca (1-2 lb bag)
        • Sugar (2 lb bag)
        • Instant coffee
        • Evaporated or shelf stable milk cans 
    • Hands on kid and family opportunities, 10AM-Noon:
  • Make challah  
  • Sort donated clothing 
  • Run the bake sale 
  • Pack dinner trays for home-bound seniors
  • Pack welcome boxes for Latinx new arrivals
  • Learn about the ya’ar – native plants, invasive species
  • At home opportunities:
    • Make a casserole and bring to Beth Am Israel (1/16, 9AM-1PM) to be donated to a homeless shelter
